Sensuality

O ur society has a problem not only with the words it chooses to say (the previous lesson ) but also with the images it chooses to see. Sensuality is the obsession with pleasing the senses; many things that are sensual appeal to what is seen and the appeals are driven by lust (the next lesson ), but there are also other kinds of sensuality and other dangers. Your Bible translation might use words such as “uncleanness,” “lasciviousness,” or “lewdness” for sensuality.

Many popular forms of entertainment (such as music, television, and movies) are filled with sensuality. Before we listen to or watch something with any ungodly content, we carefully consider questions such as these:

► Could I watch the immodesty in this movie and not be led to lust?

► Does the video I am watching influence me and others to do sinful or dangerous things?

► If Jesus were with me, would I want Him to see me being entertained by this?

Even things that we do not usually consider entertainment can be sources of ungodliness. Many commercials use sensuality to try to sell products, often by trying to link owning the product with fulfilling other desires. In this world, that frequently works for the advertisers. Many people think that their choices of what to buy are not affected in the least by advertisements; they are almost always wrong. Sensual advertisements can also affect us morally by tempting us to imitate the sinful things seen in them.

We Must Not Be Controlled by Lust

Many of the desires to please our senses are not always wrong; the problem is that people are controlled by those desires and willing to do sinful things to fulfill them instead of finding fulfillment in serving the Lord.

· The lives of many people are driven by sensual lusts. According to 1 Peter 4:1-5 , what should be the purpose of our lives instead of sensuality?

· Whom would we be rejecting by living an immoral life ( 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 )?

· Sensuality makes our lives less useful and gradually makes us less able to understand and respond to what is good. What are some of the phrases in Ephesians 4:17-19 that illustrate the deadening effect of sensuality?

· List some of the things that caused God to give up people to sensuality in Romans 1:21-24 .

We Could Cause Others To Lust through What We Wear

Another kind of sensuality comes from popular fashions. Many of the clothes advertised and displayed prominently in stores and in their advertisements are too short, too low, too tight, or too thin (in the sense of transparent). While trends will vary over time, we have little reason to expect that, in the next few years, Christians will be able to buy and wear whatever is popular and be confident that it will not be immodest. We cannot let the world set our standards, especially now.

· In Isaiah 47:1-3 , Babylon was pictured as a woman. What part of her body was uncovered that was a source of shame?

· There are several ways to be immodest besides not wearing enough clothing.
